Accidentally Filled Your Car with The Wrong Fuel?

A Land Rover owner may report a concern instance of accidentally filling the fuel tank with petrol instead of diesel, or the other way around.

The official steps to be taken are below. We ask you to please read the whole report before deciding which procedure better fits your situation.

The procedures below should be carried out by an official Land Rover agent if your vehicle is still under warranty. If not, your local service center or workshop should not have a problem with this.

Service Instructions:

Vehicles that have been incorrectly fueled and the ignition switch has not been turned to ignition on position.

1 Referring to relevant Workshop Manual, drain fuel tank.
2 Remove pump/sender module.
3 Remove all traces of residual fuel within the tank using clean absorbent cloth/paper.
4 Flush pump/sender module with clean diesel.
5 Reassemble pump/sender module to tank.
6 Fully fill fuel tank with clean diesel.
7 Road test vehicle.

Vehicle incorrectly fueled and the ignition switch has been turned to ignition on position. Freelander/Range Rover/Defender (Tdi)

1 Referring to relevant Workshop Manual, drain fuel tank.
2 Remove pump/sender module.
3 Remove all traces of residual fuel within the tank using clean absorbent cloth/paper.
4 Flush pump/sender module with clean diesel.
5 Remove fuel filter and discard.
6 Disconnect fuel feed to high-pressure pump.
7 Flush fuel housing and all fuel lines (inc. fuel return) with clean diesel.
8 Reassemble pump/sender module to tank.
9 Install new fuel filter.
10 Fully fill fuel tank with clean diesel.
11 Road test vehicle checking for normal engine operation and no stored fault codes.

Vehicle incorrectly fueled and the ignition switch has been turned to ignition on position. Discovery (Td5) and Defender (Td5)

1 Referring to relevant Workshop Manual, drain fuel tank.
2 Remove pump/sender module.
3 Remove all traces of residual fuel within the tank using clean absorbent cloth/paper.
4 Flush pump/sender module with clean diesel.
5 Disconnect fuel return feed from filter head assembly and place pipe end in suitable container to catch flushed fuel.
6 Flush high-pressure fuel feed to head (fuel will flush head and fuel cooler on return to filter head).
7 Flush fuel housing and all remaining fuel lines (inc. fuel return) with clean diesel.
8 Reassemble pump/sender module to tank.
9 Remove fuel filter and discard.
10 Install new fuel filter.
11 Fully fill fuel tank with clean diesel.
12 Road test vehicle, checking for normal engine operation and no stored fault codes.

Vehicle has run for less than two minutes.

1 Carry out model applicable procedure detailed in step 2/3.
2 Check for magnetic particles in any assembly removed and in flushed fuel.
3 If no particles detected re-assemble vehicle and road test vehicle for at least 10 miles.
4 Again carry out model applicable procedure from Section 2 checking again for magnetic particles.
5 If no magnetic particles detected reassemble vehicle completely, fill fuel tank with fresh diesel and repeat road test, checking for normal engine operation and no stored fault codes.

Vehicle has been driven until it stops.

1 The entire fuel system will need re-working and the following parts will need to be replaced: Fuel tank. Fuel tank pump module. Fuel filter housing. Fuel filter. High pressure pump. Fuel cooler (where applicable). All fuel injectors. All fuel lines. Common fuel rail (where applicable). Common rail sensors. Inline fuel pump (where applicable).

2 Road test vehicle checking for normal engine operation and no stored fault codes.

Note to owners of vehicles under warranty: The cost of this repair work is not Land Rover's responsibility. If the customer does not have all of the appropriate work carried out, warranty may be refused on all affected components.
